Suddenly, a star erupts in blinding brilliance\u2014what would you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <em>Song Shi<\/em> (History of Song), Volumes 56 and 461, a star appeared west of the Di constellation (near Lupus, approximately 1\u00b0 east of Centaurus) on May 1, 1006. At its peak, it outshone the crescent moon and cast shadows at night. By December, it reappeared in Di. Contemporary observers could not identify it\u2014some called it the &#8220;inauspicious star of the nation\u2019s sovereign&#8221; (\u56fd\u7687\u5996\u661f), a &#8220;portent of war&#8221; (\u5175\u51f6\u4e4b\u5146). Egyptian astronomer Ali ibn Ridwan noted in his commentary on Ptolemy\u2019s <em>Tetrabiblos<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;A spectacular circular body, 2.5\u20133 times larger than Venus\u2026 Its light illuminated the sky, outshining the crescent moon.&#8221;<\/em><br>Like others, he observed it low on the southern horizon. A <strong>supernova<\/strong>\u2014specifically SN 1006, the brightest stellar event in recorded history. Supernovae occur when nuclear fusion in a star ceases. Without outward thermal pressure to counter gravity, the star collapses. Reactions cease at iron\/nickel\u2014the peak of nuclear binding energy (optimal balance between strong force and Coulomb repulsion). Any fusion <em>beyond<\/em> this peak <em>absorbs<\/em> energy.
